CHUMPITAZ C, D et al. Evaluación nutricional de la población infantil warao en la comunidad de Yakariyene, estado Delta Amacuro, agosto - octubre 2004. AVFT [online]. 2006, vol.25, n.1, pp.26-31. ISSN 0798-0264.
The relationship between adequate nourishing and general health condition has been widely reported and commonplace in medical criteria. For this reason the purpose of this work is to assess the nurture distribution among the infant population of a Warao indigenous people that belong to the Yakariyene community, in order to establish their general healthiness condition. The population sample consisted of 107 individuals selected at a random. The study is based on standard anthropometric (OMS) measurements such as: weight, height, left arm circumference, corporal mass index and age. This allows an assessment of the general health condition through the link with the general nourishment distribution and the individuals size and weight condition. The results of the study suggest that half of the infant population less than 15 years of age show sign of some form of malnutrition. This sub group had either indications of overweight or underweight, being the later the most frequent situation encountered. This results indicates that a significant number of infants in this indigenous community is at risk of suffering a disease associated with this nourishment condition with the associated pathological infections that complicate such situations.
