The purpose of this study was to validate a structured questionnaire based on DSMIII about alcoholism. The questionnaire was validated in 107 control subjects and 86 phase V patients. For a prevalence of 45% the questionnaire was 98.8 sensitive and 98.1 specific, with a proportion of positive probability of 52 and of negative probability of 0.01. We can conclude that we are in the presence of an excellent tool that allows to diagnose or rule out possible alcoholic patients for clinical and/or epidemiological research.
