Abstract

Sugar alcohols are used in food products for specific groups, such as diabetic and obese patients. The aim of this study was to determinate the effect of lactitol on glycemia, and lipid profile. Eighty male rats Sprague-Dawley, divided into four groups, received lactitol through oral catheter at doses of 0.3; 1.0; 5.0 g/kg/day and saline solution during 12 weeks. Before and after the treatment were measured fasting glycemia, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and cholesterol of high, low and very low density lipoproteins. After 12 weeks the highest dose of lactitol (5 g/Kg/día) significantly increased fasting glycemia (91.35±5.1 vs. 124.69±5.7 mg/dl; p<0.05), and HDL-c concentration (32.09±1.8 vs. 59.92±2.2 mg/dl; p<0.05) and significantly decreased LDL-c concentration (31.45±4.5 vs. 17.71±3.1 mg/dl; p<0.05) without change in total serum cholesterol levels. In conclusion, these findings suggest that although lactitol is a dimeric sugar alcohol unabsorbed in the small intestine, can modify fasting glycemia and lipid profile presumably due to its metabolism by bacteria.
