Introduction: The quality control of acid fast bacilli (AFB) sputum smears has a purpose to improve the efficiency and reliability of the laboratory services, assuring that the information generated by the same, it was an exact and reliable. Objective: to evaluate the quality indicators AFB smears in the tuberculosis (TB) laboratories of the Hygiene and Epidemiology Provincial Centres from Cuba. Method: it was evaluated the quality of to 2054 slides from January to December of 2006, according to the established in the Procedures of the National Control Program of TB manual. Results:, 269 (13.1%) from the evaluated slides presented high codification, 81 (3.9%) were low codification and 1704 (83%) were negative. The rate of error for all false positive was 1,1%; didnt identify false negative results. The index of general kappa obtained was 0, 9949. The values of sensibility, specificity, predictive positive and negative value were superior to the 99%. Conclusions and recommendations: These results suggest the quality of the personnel that carries out the microscopy of AFB smears in the provincial laboratories and recommended the continuous training of the technicians for continue improving the quality of the baciloscopy diagnosis in Cuba.
