Resumen

GARAY, Rosa María et al. Pilot study on the effect of metformina in decreasing body weight in people with obesity grado 1. AVFT [online]. 2013, vol.32, n.3, pp.45-51. ISSN 0798-0264.

Introduction and Objective: Metformin, used in the management of hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome, has proven weight loss effects. However, there is little information concerning its role weight control in non-diabetic obese individuals. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of metformin over weight loss in individuals with obesity. Materials and Methods: double-blind pilot study with 19 patients, placebo group 8 people, and experimental group 11 people. The clinical history, laboratory and anthropometric assessment were realized in a period of 12 weeks. In the control group was used a white tablet of 850mg OA as placebo, and in the experimental group was used metformin 850mg tablets OA. Results: overall, the results show a decrease in all anthropometric and biochemical variables in both study groups. Nevertheless, the control group (-4,18±2,69 kg) showed a higher weight loss percentage at the end of the study than the experimental group (-3,94±2,65 kg), with significant differences between controls; there was no difference between both groups (p=0,652). Moreover, the experimental group showed reduction of waist circumference in men (112,0±7,77 cm vs. 106,17±8,70 cm, p<0.001), compared to the control group (97,0±1,41 cm vs. 95,0±7,07 cm, p=0.705). Conclusion: the results show that the use of metformin at a dosage of 850 mg/day wasn´t superior to placebo in weight reduction during a 12-week treatment period.
