PUENTES, Catherin et al. Estudio piloto sobre el efecto del 5-Hydroxy-L-Triptófano (5HTP) en la reducción de peso en pacientes adultos obesos. AVFT [online]. 2013, vol.32, n.4, pp.71-76. ISSN 0798-0264.
Introduction: For the management of obesity, several strategies concerning life style modification and pharmacological therapy have been developed. Five-hydroxyl-tryptophan has been categorized as a serotoninergic agent capable of modulating body weight. Materials and Methods: An experimental study double blind was realized with a sample of 19 patients distributed in eight individuals to the placebo group and 11 individuals for the experimental group, who were treated with 50 mg of 5HTP, using for both groups recommendations and hypocaloric meal plans of 1800 kcal/day. They were controlled every 2-weeks for 3 months period. During each control visit, anthropometric and nutritional assessment was undertaken. Biochemical determinations were carried out in the beginning and the end of the study. Results: at the end of this investigation, it was observed that both groups showed decrease in weight, but the percentage of weight loss was higher in the placebo group (-4,21±2,12) compared to the experimental group (-2,59±3,79), but not significant (p>0.05). In regards to BMI, there were significant differences within each group in each control visit. It was interesting to find a difference between initial and final values for blood pressure in the experimental group, with Systolic Blood Pressure Initial 131±12 mmHg vs. Final 126,4±10,8 mmHg (p=0.022), and Diastolic Blood Pressure Inicial 83,7±8,5 mmHg vs. Final 80,8±7,2 mmHg (p=0.022). Conclusion: Treatment with 50 mg of 5-HTP has no significant influence during weight loss intervention in patients with type I obesity.
