MORALES BRICENO, Abelardo et al. Determination of glucose of blood in thoroughbred horses medicated with phenylbutazone and flunixin meglumine. AVFT [online]. 2015, vol.34, n.4, pp.62-64. ISSN 0798-0264.
The aim of this study was to describe the levels of blood glucose associated with the administration of phenylbutazone and flunixin meglumine in horses respectively. We studied 7 thoroughbred race horses 2 years of age, sex three female and four male sex. Blood samples were taken prior to medication. Phenylbutazone was administered intravenously at a dose 4.4 mg / kg to three horses and flunixin meglumine was administered at doses of 1.1 mg / kg to 3 horses intravenously. Blood glucose levels were studied at 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours and 4 hours after medication of the study drugs. The results expressed in mg / dL were: phenylbutazone 1 hour: 108-126-131, 2 hours: 112-128-130, 3 hours: 115-130-131 and 4 hours: 130-132-134 for flunixin meglumine 1 hour: 111- 106-110, 2 hours: 114-106-113, 3 hours: 111-108-111 and 4 hours: 111-112-114. In conclusion, we observed significant changes in blood glucose in horses medicated with phenylbutazone and flunixin meglumine respectively.
