PETITTO C, Michele C y DE GREGORIO CASALE, Julia. Use of ibopamine as challenge test in the diagnosis of glaucoma. AVFT [online]. 2015, vol.34, n.4, pp.65-69. ISSN 0798-0264.
Purpose: the purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of ibopamine (3,4 di-isobutyrrylester of N-methyldopamine), on intraocular pressure (IOP) in healthy offspring of relatives with antecedent of primary open angle glaucoma. Materials and Methods: healthy individuals with a family history of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and healthy individuals with no family history of chronic open angle glaucoma were selected. Ibopamine test was performed with the instillation of 2 drops per eye of each individual spaced at 5 minutes. Measurement of the intraocular pressure within 45 minutes was performed. A positive response to the test was considered if IOP was greater than or equal to 3 mmHg compared with the initial IOP. Results: The mean initial IOP in group I was 14.4±2.49 mmHg, in group II was 15,22±2,30 mmHg. The test was positive in 90% in group I with an average increase of IOP of 6,86 mmHg while in group II, the test was negative in all individuals included. Conclusion: the use of ibopamina as a drug to stimulate the D1 dopaminergic receptors and the consequent increase in the production of the aqueous humor is an important tool for early detection of asymptomatic individuals with potential alteration of the ocular drainage system.
