Critical values defined by George Lundberg over 40 years ago, are results of laboratory analyzes that can reflect a pathophysiological state so far from normal, which are a threat to the life of the patient, if no action is taken urgently; its clear, accurate and timely clinical staff of patient care, notification is a fundamental responsibility of laboratories, as essential to patient safety aspect as quality requirement in the post phase analytical required by the various organizations of accreditation in the context of clinical laboratory. Research results and experiences published in the literature focused communication management of critical values in the definition of laboratory tests and their respective ranges of critical values, accurate and timely these results and evaluation of management reporting; practices described variables significantly between laboratories in different countries, both in the development of procedures and management communication, recognizing the need for harmonization. Current regard, initiatives draw attention to the definition of procedures focused on patient risk and risk assessment, and the need for evidence based on the results of studies that account for the impact of management on the patient safety.
