MACHILLANDA, Sheila; ROMERO, Karen y RIVERA, Blanca. Carcinoma Mucoepidermoide Bronquial en la Infancia: Reporte de un caso y Revision de la Literatura . RFM [online]. 2000, vol.23, n.1, pp.55-58. ISSN 0798-0469.
10-year-old. girl case with four hospitalizations because of recurrent pneumonia of lower right lobe is presented. Chest radiograph showed an infiltrate with tendency to condensation, air bronchogram and radiolucent round image on the right lung base. The chest computed tomography showed an heterogeneous tumor in the right posterior lateral segment. The bronchoscopic examination noticed a protrusion of polipoid, tumor in the basal right bronchus. Subsequently the pacient underwent right lower lobectomy. Histologically, the tumor had characteristics of a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Until 1997, there had been only reported thirty three cases of mucoepidermoid bronchial carcinoma in children. Clinically the tumor is manifested as recurrent or prolonged pneumonies. Children with these clinical manifestations should undergo exhaustive diagnostic investigation by chest tomography and bronchoscopy. Actually, total resection of the affected lung lobe with the tumor and the respective lobe, hiliar linfatics nodes is the most accepted treatment.
