Diabetes mellitus is one of the most frequent diseases of the entire world and it is considered a public health problem since it´s chronic and acute consequences. Its characterized by a persistent hyperglicemia that is accompanied by disturbances in lipidic and proteic metabolism, which finally drive to vascular lesions, with small and big vessel affectation, producing macro and microangiopathy. Besides this, neuropathic, nephritic and immunologic damage results in detriment of quality of life, functional limitation and even death in some cases. In this paper we review the participation of the nurse, their planning and execution of interventions on reference to the care of the diabetic patient, and the attentions in the most common acute and chronic complications.
