VILLALOBOS, JJ; CARRASQUEL, E; PEREZ-GONZALEZ, M and CAPRILES, F. Cuantificación de los niveles de Eritropoyetina (Epo) Endógena y su Relación con Variables Epidemiológicas en un Grupo de Pacientes en Hemodiálisis. RFM [online]. 2001, vol.24, n.2, pp.128-134. ISSN 0798-0469.
We investigated endogenous Erythropoietin (EPO) values in Chronic Renal Failure patients under hemodialysis. Our study was performed with 33 chronic hemodialysis patients from Frasenius Medical Care of Venezuela. Range age 22 -77 years, 36,6% Caucasians, 21,2% Negroes and 42,4% Mestizos. The inclussion criteria were: No ReEpoHu received, no active bleeding and no blood transfussions performed in the last three months. All patients had three dialysis sessions weekly. Samples were obtained before the first and last dialysis of any given week Analysis of EPO was performed by a chemoluminescence method (Nichols Diagnostics Institute, USA). Values were expressed as mean ± SE. Endogenous EPO values were 10,43 ± 1,35 mU/mL before the first dialysis sesion and 11,36 ± 0,31 mU/mL before the last dialysis, values were lower than those decribed in literature for other countries. Epo values according to racial background were 12,58 ± 1,56 mU/mL for Caucasians, 7,61 ± 1,07 mU/mL for Negroes and 11,09 ± 1,62 mU/mL for Mestizos. There was no difference in Epo values despite the day of dialysis used to sample and related to gender, age or base pathology but it seems with time receiving dialysis treatment background.
