Abstract

This a descriptive study realized with a selected sample of Rheumatoid Arthritis patients in the Ophtalmology Service of the Universitary Hospital of Caracas, during April to July of 2000; with the purpose to determine the dry eye frequency in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients and its asociation to key symptons of this pathology. There were studied 89 patients through a symptomatical questionnaire and ophtalmological evaluation. The results were tabulated basing in frequency, percentage and x2 test. There were found a 37,07% of dry eye frequency; and ardover, foreign body sensation, ocular driener and ocular nuisance with air conditioner (p < 0,05) as associated symptons. The ophtalmological complications in this patients were: dry eye, scleritis, episcleritis, glaucoma, keratitis and toxics cataracts. This study give useful information for the dry eye suspect of physicians who care and handle the Rheumatoid patients.
