Overtraining of thoroughbred racehorses can produce rhabdomyolysis characterized by muscle necrosis and myoglobinuria. This disease may affect some enzymes as lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and subsequently free fatty acid (FFA) metabolism. LPL activity and FFA concentration was determined in Gluteus medius muscle of 12 horses affected by rhabdomyolysis and 12 thoroughbred racehorses. In the rhabdomyolysis affected horses there was a significant decrease in LPL activity (M±SE, 22.15±2.29 nmol FFA/min.g in control vs 16.91±1.25 nmol FFA/min.g in rhabdomyolysis; p­0.03). Also FFA concentration was reduced (1.45±0.27 nmol FFA/g in control vs 0.86±0.06 nmol FFA/g in rhabdomyolysis; p­0.01). It is concluded that rhabdomyolysis affects muscle oxidative activity.
