The effect of the aqueous extract of leaves from Bauhinia megalandra, Momordica charantia and Taraxacum officinale on the glucose intestinal absorption was measured, using isolated intestinal segments. Also the effect of B. megalandra leaves extract on the ¹⁴C-glucose uptake by enterocyte brush border membrane vesicles was studied, by the fast filtration method. The B. megalandra leaves extract was the only one able to inhibit the intestinal glucose absorption in a concentration dependant way and additive to phlorizine. B. megalandra leaves extract drastically reduced the ¹⁴C-glucose uptake by enterocyte brush border membrane vesicles in a similar amount as 1 mM phlorizine does. B. megalandra leaves extract inhibited intestinal glucose absorption by blocking the Na⁺-glucose cotransporter.
