BELLO, A y MIRANDA SARABIA, S. Retina: Degeneración Macular relacionada con la Edad: Conceptos Actuales. RFM [online]. 2002, vol.25, n.2, pp.237-243. ISSN 0798-0469.
The macula is in charge of the most fine and detailed vision, the central vision. By using the direct ophtalmoscopy, the macula can be visualized. Unfortunately, it is often target of a degenerative pathology, as a result of humans process of aging, and harmed by other bodys systems. The Age Related Macular Degeneration is characterized clinically by large soft drusen and pigmented epithelium and retina in the early stage, and by geographic atrophy, choroidal neovascularization, pigment ephithelial detachment, and fibrous scarring of the macula in the late stage. These result in an important decrease of visual acuity, and blindness may occur. This is a review of the most important cause of blindness in the elderly, the Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
