VARGAS-ARENAS, RE. Estudios individualizados de Maestría y de Doctorado de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, evolución y resultados de la aplicación del Programa. (1996 - 2002). RFM [online]. 2003, vol.26, n.1, pp.8-16. ISSN 0798-0469.
ABSTRACT From November 1996 to July 2002, 110 professionals qualified in Venezuelan universities applied to the program of individualized studies for master and doctoral degrees (ISMDD) in the Faculty of Medicine (FM) of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV). Fifty per cent of them have been accepted in the program. Six out of the 55 students have been qualified as doctors (four) or magisters (two), whereas 35 are in the Fase I of the studies, 12 in Fase II and two in Fase III ready for submitting the Doctoral Thesis. The majority of applicants and accepted students have been physicians and biologists from Medical Schools and Institutes of the FM-U.C.V. Applications from the staff of other schools of the F.M such as Bioanalysis, Nutrition and Dietetics, Nursery and Public Health have been poor or absent. There is an increase in the number of applications from lecturers and researchers of faculties in Health Sciences from other Venezuelan universities. According to these results we strongly recommend that the research activity must be a prioritary matter within the FM-U.C.V to reinforce the implementation of the program. A strong promotion of the program is also needed among the staff of the Faculty. With the experience in the application of the program the time has come for the assessment of the quality of the studies and for its accreditation in the National Council of Venezuelan Universities.
