ABSTRACT: The creation and development of the Preventive and Social Department in the "Luis Razetti" Medical School as the logical instrument used by medical education for facing and trying the health as a public problem is highlighted, in addition to other departments in charge of trying the health as an individual problem. The development is presented from the initial notions of Hygiene in the Prime of Medicine Chair till the present Department, with four Chairs. Finally, the review of its present structure is proposed in order to develop the competences referred to the behavior of a physician. For that, the creation of the Department of Medical Humanism, including historical, philosophical, bioethics and legal topics is highly proposed.
