To contribute to the construction of a conceptual frame that supports the curricular updating of the School of Medicine, the roles of the Cognitive Theory and Instructional Technology are discussed. Elements are also underlined to indicate ways to further both the learning of specific discipline contents and the application of cognitive strategies, through instruction design. Additionally, some factors required for the development of learning environments are identified to allow for the students’ productive insertion into a knowledge-based society.
