Abstract

It was realized a prospective, descriptive study in 93 randomized patients distributed in 4 groups in order to evaluate the effects of the solutions dextrose 5 %, lactate ringer, saline and dextro - saline 0.45 % solutions on maternal serum electrolytes values and glucose values either mothers or newborns. Twenty four patients (group 1) received dextrose 5 % solution, 21(group 2) ringer lactate, 25 (group 3) saline solution, and 23 (group 4) dextro- saline solution. It were realized sodium, potassium, chlorine and maternal glucose measurements before solutions infusions and in the immediate postpartum period. Also were determined newborn glucose serum values and correlated with maternal values. In all 4 groups were registered an increase on maternal glucose values, higher in groups 1 and 4 than in groups 2 and 3. Sodium levels decrease in groups 1 and 4 and increase in groups 2 and 3. Potassium levels decrease significantly in all groups and chlorine levels were greatly decreased on groups 1 and 4. It was observed a direct and positive relationship between newborn and mother glucose levels after intravenous infusion. We concluded that hydro electrolytic solutions used during labor induction did not alter in a pathological way neither maternal serum electrolytes values nor serum glucose values, both pregnant mothers and newborns.
