ZAMORA, Nelson C. Sobrevivencia de Sitophilus oryzae (L.) en harina cruda y extruida de granos de Canavalia ensiformis. INHRR [online]. 2005, vol.36, n.1, pp.21-27. ISSN 0798-0477.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the survival of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) on raw and extruded jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) seeds fluor. The content of antinutritional factors (haemaglutination title and canavanine) was determined. The haemagglutinating activity was eliminated as result of the high temperature (155 ˚C) employed during the extrusion process. The canavanine content in raw and extruded fluor was not affect by the treatment of extrusion. Survival was measured in adult rice weevils (Sitophilus oryzae) fed diets with fluors and starch of C. ensiformis seeds. Survival of rice weevils fed with raw and extruded fluor was lower than that of the weevils kept in starvation (negative control). The dialysis of raw and extruded fluor improved the survival of S. oryzae in relation to the negative control, but survival was not as good as in the insects fed with pea cotyledons fluor (positive control). The fluors supplemented with arginine (0,1%) did not show improved in the survival of rice weevils. The mortality caused by starch of extruded fluor was not different from that of the negative control. As a whole, the results indicate that S. oryzae is susceptible to antinutritive factors such as canavanine.
