SUMMARY Medullar thyroid carcinoma happens between the fifth and sixth decade of the life, having a bigger incidence for the female sex. OBJECTIVES: In this work we pretended studied the pathological clinical characteristics of those patients treated with this pathology in the Military Hospital of Caracas from 1983 to 2000 year. METHODS: The clinical histories of the patients treated with medullar thyroid cancer were revised and they were compared with those obtained in international studies. RESULTS: Treated five patients with medullar thyroid carcinoma and all of them were classified like sporadic cases. Four patients were male. This pathology was presented like thyroid nodules whose average measured 3, 7 cm. All of them had metastases lymph node in the moment of diagnosis. All patients are carried out total thyroidectomy, central dissection of the neck and modified dissection of the affected neck. CONCLUSIONS: The treatment accepted for this type of cancer is the total thyroidectomy and the central dissection of the ipsilateral neck due to the high incidence of metastasis lymph node present in these cases.
