Objectives: This work has by object to investigate the epidemic, clinical and biological characteristics of the carcinoma of Hurthle cells, treated in the Military Hospital of Caracas. Methods: the clinical histories and the Pathological Anatomy files of the patients with cancer of thyroid in the Military Hospital of Caracas from 1983 to 1999 were revised. Variables like as the age and the sex were determined in patients with carcinoma of cells of Hurthle. By the way, biological variables of this tumor were analyzed. Possible influence of the treatment about global and free illness life was determinate. Results: Four patients presented carcinoma of Hurthle cells. All the patients were women. The tumoral size oscillates between 0.5 cm and 9 cm. Not had evidence of lymph node metastases neither at distance for the moment of the diagnostic. One case was multifocal. Two patients carried out total thyroidectomy, one almost total thyroidectomy and the other lobectomy and itsmectomy. All tumors presented capsular invasion. ConclusIOn: The results obtained in this work are comparable with those of the international literature. We are in favor that in the tumors of Hurthle cells should be treated with total thyroidectomy.
