METHODS: We reviewed in retrospective form, medical histories of the patients with diagnosis of locally advanced cancer of breast, being 24 patients with diagnosis of inflammatory cancer, treated in the Breast Pathology Service of the Hospital Oncológico Padre Machado, between January of 1992 and December of 2004. RESULTS: The age average was of 47.8 years, 66.67 % were premenopause; 58.33 % were located in the entire breast, the indurations, edema, eritema appeared in a 62.50 %, 91.67 % and 95.83 %, respectively. In all patients the diagnosis was made by incisional biopsy that included the skin. 50 % of patients presented fixed axillary nodes and 16.67 % presented metastasis at the time of diagnosis. The 83.33 % of patients received primary chemotherapy, the surgery was made in 66.67 %; being most frequents the modified radical mastectomy. The 54.17 % had positive estrogenic receptors. Nine patients had distant recurrence (37.50 %). 66.7 % of patients present probability of systemic relapse at 33.5 months. The average of survival rate of these patients was of 15.73 months. CONCLUSIONS: In spite of being a little frequent disease, with a precocious systemic dissemination, high possibility of locoregional recurrences and poor response to the treatment, its diagnosis is important to be able to perform a suitable treatment.
