OBJECTIVES: To establish the diagnoses value of the fine needle puncture aspiration cytology in the mammary gland. METHOD: The following one is a retrospective and descriptive study, of fine needle puncture aspiration cytology of the mammary gland tumors in patients evaluated by the Mammary Pathology Service of the Instituto de Oncología Dr. Miguel Pérez Carreño in the lapse between January 1996 and April 2005. RESULTS: The 95 % of the patients were female. The more often tumors location was the CSE in 40 %, with a tumor size between 3.1 cm and 6 cm in 36 % of the cases. The fine needle puncture aspiration cytology was diagnostic in 82.3 % of the cases, 91 % were solid lesions and 59 % were benign. We realized excisional biopsy in 45% of the cases, and percutaneous tru-cut biopsy in 44 %; being malignant in 55 % of the cases, with a 10 % of false negative, while the sensibility was 90 %, and the specificity was 94 %. The value positive predictive and the value negative predictive were 90 %. CONCLUSIONS: The fine needle puncture aspiration cytology is a highly reliable method that allows quickly to diagnosis the mammary tumors.
