HERRERA, JUAN  y  HOSPITAL VARGAS DE CARACAS. SERVICIO DE CIRUGÍA et al. Identificación de recidiva de cáncer colorrectal  con tomografía de emisión de positrones.: A propósito de 2 casos. Rev. venez. oncol. [online]. 2007, vol.19, n.1, pp.80-83. ISSN 0798-0582.

OBJECTIVES: Actually, the main indications for CTPET in colorectal carcinoma are for staging, restaging and detection of recurrence. The value of CT-PET in detection of colorectal carcinoma recurrence is well established, with recent meta-analysis of the literature and has demonstrated the high accuracy in the evaluation of colorectal carcinoma. Although this, because higher cost, it is used in some cases is restricted. METHODS: A 2 case report of Surgery Service 1 Hospital Vargas of Caracas descriptive study and literature review, of patients with colorectal carcinoma background, with negative screening test, and increased serum levels of tumoral markers and they have normal conventional imaging. The realization of CT-PET high accuracy allows the recurrence detection. DISCUSION: Unlike computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, which shows only anatomic detail, the CT-PET shows the cellular biochemicals and physiologic phenomena, his utilities in oncology take and advantage of the observation made 75 years ago, that malignant cells have higher rates of aerobic glycolisis than the normal tissues. The CT-PET has confirmed his utility in the evaluation of colorectal carcinoma, with earlier detection of sub clinic tumors, recurrence and distant metastasis disease, and to the differentiation between inflammation, fibrosis and neoplasic cells because and complement the continuos seen patients for his high accuracy, it’s especially useful in the evaluation when diagnostic imaging is unrevealing and increased serum levels of tumoral markers. Nevertheless The CTPET cost saving are high rates utilities for the detection of patients recurrences.
