OBJECTIVES: Evaluated the prognostic factors in patients with squamous oral cavity cancer. METHODS: Retrospective research in 1990- 2000. 92 patients of head and neck department of Oncological Hospital Padre Machado. Prognostic factors: age at diagnosis, gender, tobacco, alcohol abuse, and anatomic sub site, size, and histological grade, presence of neck nodal metastases, stage, and treatment were documented. T Student-test was used to examine the association of recurrence, 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates were estimated with a Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: Age ranged from 26 - 96 years, with a median of 61.09. 48 (52.17 %) were male. 70 % smokers. Most common location was oral tongue (41.30 %). Advanced stages more frequent 61 %. 21 had close/positive margins. 101 neck dissections 23 % of clinically positive neck changes to negative neck after surgery 25 % of clinically negative neck changes to positive neck. 52 received postoperative radiotherapy. 18.48 % developed recurrence local and regional. Only gender was prognostic factor for recurrence (P<0.05). Age, tobacco, alcohol, location, grade, size, margin lymph nodes stage and postoperative radiotherapy were not associated with relapse or survival. Disease-free survival 5 years was 71 % overall survival 87 %. 5.43 % were second primary tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Gender was a prognostic factor associated for recurrence, size, location; surgical margins are important factors for local recurrences nodal neck status for regional recurrences.
