OBJECTIVES: The malnutrition is the more frequent second diagnosis in patients with cancer; these due to be at the diagnosis moment of the disease it is necessary to make the nutritional evaluation, which will allow us to establish the best suitable nutritional support and the follow up of the same patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the nutritional state of the children whom assist to consult of Pediatric Oncology Department Dr. Luis Razetti Oncology Institute. METHODS: Realized descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study of 57 patients with oncology pathology who attended in the consultation of the Service of Pediatric Oncology, Dr. Luis Razetti of Capital District between the months January and May of year 2006. To whom was practice integral evaluation of the growth and the nutritional state. RESULTS: There evidenced of malnourished for deficit in 23 patients (40.4 %), normal well-nourished in 28 (49.1 %) and malnourished for overweight in 6 (10.5 %). The relationship between malnutrition and oncology therapy is not statistically significant. Nevertheless, 100 % of the patients with advanced cancer were some grade of undernourished found a statistically a difference. CONCLUSION: The results allow us to make the following recommendations: 1. To standardize criteria of nutritional risk for oncology pediatric patients, adapted to the national reality. 2. Nutritional Evaluation to all the oncology pediatrics patients at the time of diagnosis. 3. Individualized nutritional intervention. 4. Nutritional and psycho-social support thought a multidisciplinary and an interdisciplinary staff.
