OBJECTIVE: To establish the idiosyncrasy of the Venezuelan patients with these maladies. METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective study included patients with benign and malignant breast lesions underwent surgical procedures at the breast disease service of the Oncological Institute “Dr. Luis Razetti”, between January and December of 2006. Clinical characteristic, diagnostic procedure and histological findings were registered. RESULTS: Evaluated 285 patients. The 99 % were female, with median age of 52 years. 185 patients (65 %) had malignant lesions. Of those cases, the most frequent stage was II (41 %). The 55 % of tumors were classified as T2. Axillaries dissection was performed in 59 % of patients. Negative margins were reported in the 85 % of cases. The surgical procedure most frequently done was partial mastectomy (41 %) followed by modified radical mastectomy (35 %). The 49 % of patients underwent surgery between two and four months after their first evaluation. Immunohistochemical studies reported positive estrogen and progesterone receptors in more than 60 % of the cases; HER 2-neu was positive in 24 %. CONCLUSION: The sample evaluated reflects the clinical and histological profile of the population that seeks medical attention at our institution. The management of these patients must be individualized and adapted to these particular characteristics that differ from those found in the rest of the world.
