OBJECTIVE: The central basis of this study was to determine the coping strategies used by the parents of children and adolescents with diagnostic of cancer, because their children are constantly changing in physical aspects, social and psychological, resulting from disease sufferers and procedures physicians who must be subjected parents being the main figure of support and emotional support. METHOD: The type and level of field research was descriptive, the population was comprised of parents attending to the Pediatric Specialty Hospital of Maracaibo, selecting a probability sample of 118 subjects of children with newly diagnosed, in treatment and off treatment. The data were obtained through the estimation of coping questionnaire. RESULTS: The all results were analyzed with a descriptive statistics inferential. It was determined that the strategy commonly used by the parents of the children and the adolescents with cancer was centered on the problem, and the religious coping dimensions and the positive reinterpretation. CONCLUSIONS: The statistically significant differences were observed between the groups, with a statistically equal to 0.033 (P <0.05) in the scale withdrawal, which was lower in the group of parents of the children who are outside of treatment, and 0.00 (P <0.05) in the dimension of the acceptance, which is found predominantly in the treatment group and treatment and the denial was 0.00 (P <0.05) were found exacerbated in the group of parents of children and newly diagnosed adolescents.
