Abstract. To evaluate the application of Unsatisfied Basic Necessities (UBN) method to identify communities higher risk of suffering undernutrition in the first 6 years of life, a study of prevalence was carried out in the west side of Barquisimeto city, Venezuela. From the population of childrens inhabitants of the zone, a randomized stratified and for conglomerate sample was obtained. Five suburb strata, according to percent of homes with UBN, were constituted. 538 children in 16 suburbs were studied. Indicators of UBN in the family, survey of Graffar Mendez Castellano to determine the social strata, weight and height were obtained. 10,8% of the children showed current undernutrition, 25,3% height/age deficit and 5,8% overweight. Percent of children suffering chronic undernutrition increased in gradients with worst life conditions (30% in 60-100% UBN). The presence of shanty housing, housing without any basic service, low educational level of the mother, family income: donation type and living in suburbs with 60-100% UBN was associated with a higher risk of presenting height/ age deficit (Estimated relative risk: 1.55, 1.29, 1.35, 2.43 and 1.2 respectively). The risk of showing a weight/age deficit was higher in children that live in shanty housing, crític brimful housing and where the family chief member was a non specialized worker (Estimated relative risk: 1.56, 1.34 and 1.39 respectively). The use of the UBNM and the mentioned indicators offer advantages in identify the locations and families with a higher risk of infantile chronic malnutrition children. An Venez Nutr 2003;16(1):16-22.
