The article´s main focus is to analyze the Venezuelan food system (VFS´s) recent trends and the effects on its performance, due to changes in the international and national environment. The research was based on secondary information and previous documents. It was mainly used official statistics as basis for variable estimations and to analyze the VFS´s components (agricultural production, food industry production, external trade and consumption) and to do the balance of what occurred during the 1998-2012 period. Finally, it was introduced a discussion about the VFS´s perspectives if it is still the economic development strategy and the agrifood policies that have been implemented during the last years.
