BERNE PENA, Yelitza et al. Consumption and adequacy of energy and nutrients in preschool in a rural area of Lara State: Venezuela. An Venez Nutr [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.2, pp.234-241. ISSN 0798-0752.

Consumption data collected through instruments such as consumer surveys, to assess and plan interventions, monitor dietary intake and nutritional status of individuals, groups or nations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the energy and nutrients consumption and to establish the adequacy of the diet of 129 preschoolers in a rural area of Lara state, through three 24-hour recalls nonconsecutive. The amounts of energy, macronutrients, fiber and micronutrients calcium, iron and zinc and its adequacy percentage except for iron were calculated. The average caloric intake was 1265.58 ± 105.31 cal / day, distributed as follows: 15.57% protein, 22.28% fat and 53,16% carbohydrates . The adequacy of protein exceeded the recommendation and calorie intake and iron was acceptable in the total population. The calcium and zinc was deficient in 58.1% and 99.2% respectively. Conclusion: Consumption of energy and iron was adequate while zinc was deficient in a high percentage of the population studied, for what is required to run intervention measures to remedy or correct the deficit in the consumption of this nutrient.
