Introduction:
In Venezuela there are frequent fluctuations in the prices of foodstuffs in the different stores and commercial outlets where they are sold, a behavior that tends to increase but also reflects the reality of instability in the country. Objective. To know the price variations of a sample of commonly used foods in supermarkets in the Metropolitan Area of Caracas. Methodology. Fifteen supermarkets located between the northeast and southeast of the Metropolitan Area of Caracas were selected for convenience. Based on the value taken directly from the product packaging on the shelves where they were displayed or from the bar reader, the prices of 75 foods registered by a pair of meters were adjusted to dollars according to the BCV exchange rate on the day of collection; to Kilograms or Liters. The KoboCollect tool was used for the remote transmission of the records through cell phone equipment or devices. Price variations were expressed as averages, standard deviations, minimum and maximum values. Results. The legumes group recorded the lowest average value (9.5 USD) and a difference of 6.7 USD, between its maximum value (13.7 USD) and minimum (7.0 USD). The meat, dairy and derivatives group recorded the highest average value (99.6 USD) and resulted in a difference of 38.2 USD between its maximum value (130.9 USD) and minimum (92.7 USD). Conclusion. Maintaining updated information on the price of foodstuffs commonly used by Venezuelans is one of the measures to strengthen the national food system.I
