MARCANO, Xiomarys  y  MENDEZ-PEREZ, Betty. Nutritional assessment of Venezuelan adolescents based on the energy-protein ratio and other body composition indicators. An Venez Nutr [online]. 2025, vol.38, n.1, pp.11-22.  Epub 16-Dic-2025. ISSN 0798-0752.  https://doi.org/10.54624/2025.38.1.003.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the anthropometric nutritional status using the energy-protein ratio in a group of Venezuelan school-aged adolescents and compare the findings with other anthropometric nutritional assessment indicators. A cross-sectional, descriptive-exploratory study was conducted, in which 601 adolescents aged 9 to 17 years from public schools in the states of Apure, Mérida, and Miranda were evaluated. The variables assessed were weight, height, arm circumference, and triceps skinfold thickness, and the following indices were calculated: energy-protein ratio (EPI), fat area (FA), muscle area (MA), and body mass index (BMI). A simple descriptive analysis of the primary and combined anthropometric variables was performed, as well as a box plot analysis. Descriptive statistics and percentiles were calculated, and a bivariate descriptive analysis, analysis of independence, sensitivity and specificity, Kappa, and Kendall’s Tau-b rank correlation coefficient were performed. The research results show that the energy-protein ratio (EPR) is an indicator that allows for the diagnosis of anthropometric nutritional status in its various categories. Furthermore, the energy-protein index (EPI), combined with other body composition indicators such as fat area (FA) and muscle area, allows for the identification of deficiencies and/or excesses in an individual’s nutritional status
