Scientific education is key to fostering civic engagement; however, this has not always been the prevailing perspective. The aim of this essay is to describe the integration of science into the curriculum during the establishment of Chile's popular school system. A historical analysis of sources was conducted to characterize science teaching at the end of the 19th century, within the context of scientific advancements, educational thought, regulations, teacher training, and classroom implementation.
