The article analyzes the effectiveness of the phonetic method in the “Leo, juego y aprendo” program designed to improve reading skills of children in vulnerable contexts. It was implemented in 309 schools in Venezuela over two consecutive school years. Surveys of teachers and EGRA tests were used. A 51% increase in reading comprehension and a 25% increase in fluency were obtained. 84% of the teachers reported significant improvements, concluding that the program has a positive impact on reading and writing.
