This article reports a design-based research study that culminates in the identification of principles for developing educational video games aimed at students hospitalized in pediatric oncology units. Following the iterative design and evaluation of a prototype focused on pre-literacy processes, qualitative and quantitative data were triangulated from teachers, experts, and professionals. The findings allowed for the systematization of pedagogically, technically, and emotionally appropriate design principles for educational games in sensitive and high-vulnerability clinical-educational settings.
