Resumen

ACERO, Juan José. The autonomy of grammar and the polarity of the proposition . RF [online]. 2003, vol.21, n.44, pp.7-44. ISSN 0798-1171.

This paper deals with two arguments, the Circularity Argument and the Polarity Arguments, that led Wittgenstein to claim that grammar is autonomous, i.e., that no rule of grammar can be justified by providing a fact as a reason to believe in its truth. It is argued that the Polarity Argument is intimately linked to central doctrines of Wittgenstein’s post-tractarian philosophy and shown how the acceptance of the autonomy of grammar forced Wittgenstein to give up the project of providing a modal justification of the rules of logical syntax.

Palabras clave : Grammar; proposition; polarity; meaning; Wittgenstein.
