This paper proposes an analysis of certain aspects of the Montaignian construction of personal identity, arguing that, in the case of the Essays, the play between ipseidad-mismidad occurs without recurring to the narrative proposed by Ricoeur. Special attention is centered on the relationship between the construction of identity and the conceptions of essay, memory, language and style.
