Diego de Avendaño (1594-1688), a Jesuit and author of Thesaurus Indicus (Antwerp, 1668), has normally been catalogued as a great defender of black slaves in the Spanish colonies of America and even as the first abolitionist. Taking into account Thesaurus Indicus, this article studies to what degree this assertion may be true.
