The concentration of total protein (PT) in the blood serum was evaluated in 31 goats Canaria breed two weeks before or dry period (PS) and for four weeks after birth or the beginning of lactation (IL). The animals were divided into two groups depending on the number of births. Group I was composed of 21 goats of one and two births, and the Group II, composed 10 animals of three or more animal births. Blood samples were obtained by puncture of the jugular vein and centrifuged to obtain serum. Proteins were determined with enzymatic method of Wiener and was applied a analysis of variance, with determination of means and standard deviation, using the factor analysis procedure (SPSS). The highest concentration was in the PT group II to the IL and the lowest concentration of PT was in Group I in the PS. The behavior of the PT in both groups, there was significant difference (P<0.05) between the PS and the first week of IL Group I. Also found that there was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the same period for Group II. The number of births did not influence the profile of total proteins in plasma periods evaluated. It can conclude that the breed Canaria goats are able to maintain a concentration of about 72.3 g/L in the dry period and the initiation of lactation of 78.5 g/L.
