Abstract

CRUZ, M.R; STIA, M.H  and  FEUGEAS, J. Tribology on steels with duplex treatments: A review. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2005, vol.20, n.1, pp.39-48. ISSN 0798-4065.

The aim of this work is to establish the state of the art related to a tribological focus on tool steels with different duplex treatments based on nitriding (gaseous or ionic) + hard thin coatings by plasma assisted techniques. Tool steels are used to forge and machine other materials, and are thus designed to withstand extreme conditions, such as high contact loads, high temperatures and aggressive environments. Duplex treatments offer excellent possibilities to improve tool steel performance. Although their beneficial characteristics to improve service life are well known, at present several combinations (and several tool steel specifications) make it difficult to obtain a unique and universal duplex treatment. For this reason duplex treatments require a broad knowledge of tribological performance. This review is focused in terms related to adhesion and tribological performance of duplex treatments.

Keywords : Tribology; steels with duplex treatments.
