ALBANO, C et al. Efecto de la radiación gamma en compuestos de Polimetilmetacrilato / Algas CalcáreasGAMMA RADIATION EFFECT ON POLYMETHYLMETACRYLATE (PMMA) / SEAWEED RESIDUE COMPOUNDS. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2006, vol.21, n.1, pp.21-28. ISSN 0798-4065.

PMMA reinforced with seaweed residues composites were evaluated, varying filler content between 0-30% and the radiation dose in a 0-100 kGy range. Materials were characterized through rheological, mechanical, thermal, thermodegradative and morphological tests. The usage of seaweed caused an increase in Young’s modulus and showed improved thermal stability, which indicates a filler reinforcing effect. A decrease in tensilestrength and an elongation at break was observed. This was attributed to poor interfacial adhesion. Radiation caused polymer degradation that was shown in a change of color and a decrease in thermal stability and a detriment in mechanical performance. The glass transition temperature did not show significant variations with filler content, but a decrease from 102 to 98 °C was noticed when composites were irradiated.
