LEE, CARLOS; ABOU, FIRAS y LOPEZ, OSCAR A. Seismic risk in old type ii school buildings.. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2007, vol.22, n.2, pp.99-109. ISSN 0798-4065.
The Old Type II are school buildings that were built more than 50 years ago, designed with less demanding standards than the current ones, similar to those that collapsed in Cariaco during the Earthquake of 1997. The structural and architectural drawings of these constructions are not available, neither the calculations used in their design. Preliminary results of the seismic evaluation of these constructions are presented, using elastic dynamic analysis and approximate techniques of inelastic static analysis, under the framework of current Venezuelan standards. An exhaustive compilation of the structural and architectural characteristics of the schools was carried out in several cities of the country, confirming the repetitive character of these buildings. Detailed plans and a virtual model consisting of images and digital videos of the building were developed. The dynamic response was determined considering a reduction factor that is consistent with the limited energy dissipation capacity of constructions of that age. The capacity to shear force was estimated conservatively assuming the simultaneous collapse of all columns of one story, including the short column effects that generate the infill walls. The elastic demands/capacity ratio is approximately equal to 6.3 ignoring the walls, exceeding the acceptable value of 2, but less than this when including the walls. It is concluded that the structure of these schools should be retrofitted. Retrofitting options that take advantage of the infill walls as seismic resistant elements are recommended.
