Using Schwalbe’s analytical model and fractal principles based on tension fracture surface topography, the Crack Size Tolerance Index -!c, and the Fracture Toughness KIC, were predicted for the austenoferritic SAF 2205 type steel aged at 475 ºC between 0 and 120 h. It was observed that KIC, -!c and the Fractal Dimension of the fracture surfaces decrease monotonically as the time of aging increases. Although the fracture mechanism of separation was the same for all the interval of aging times (micro-void coalescence), the higher the time at 475 ºC, the smaller the tortuosity of the fracture surfaces. The KIC values from the literature closely resemble the present results.
