Pitting corrosion is one of the failure mechanisms which occur most frequently in the chemical, oil and petrochemical industries. This failure may occur when metals or alloys are exposed to an aggressive environment. Knowledge as to how pitting appears and its early detection could lead to considerable savings since it would avoid any shutdowns to operations in industrial plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pitting corrosion susceptibility of duplex stainless steel (SAF 2205) welded joints when submitted to a saline solution similar to a marine environment. Two welding process were used in this work: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) and Plasma Arc Welding (PAW). Results show that the Duplex Stainless Steel SAF 2205 has a very high pitting corrosion resistance compared to other similar commercial alloys and the GTAW welding process performs better.
