Abstract

This study concerns the increase in the basicity index of a flux in liquid state, represented by the ternary system of MnO-SiO2- CaO oxides. The increase of the basicity index is achieved through the addition of CaO, keeping constant the MnO/SiO2 percentage relation of the system, in order to evaluate the behaviour of the chemical activity and its effect on the chemical composition resulting from the metal deposited by welding. Results show that it is possible to intensify the transfer of manganese to the deposited metal and, at the same time, reduce the transfer of silicon, sulfur, phosphorus and carbon.
