Abstract

ALVAREZ BRITO, Rafael S  and  LOPEZ DE RAMOS, Aura L. Experimental study of a small cooling system using R-600a as refrigerant. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2013, vol.28, n.3, pp.55-64. ISSN 0798-4065.

Two cooling systems of equal capacity were compared through its thermal and mechanical performance as well as its energy efficiency. In this research work, an HFC substance (the R-134a) and an HC substance (the R-600a) were used as refrigerants. To this aim, the COP, the input power consumed and the electrical power required by the compressor, the heat exchanged in each one of the systems, the isoentropic efficiency and the EER were evaluated. The use of R-600a produces the following results with respect to R-134a: a COP 30% higher, a mechanical input power 89% lower, a heat transfer area 45% smaller, a decrease in the electrical consumption from 2.83 A to 1.4 A and an increase in the EER from 2.44 to 1.75. The results obtained suggest that R-600a is a real technically and economically feasible solution to replace R-134a in refrigeration systems and thus comply with international regulations about the replace of greenhouse effect substances.
