Abstract
PINTO-CASTILLA, Susana; CASTRO, Gustavo; BETANCOURT, Paulino and BRITO, Joaquín L. Synthesis and characterization of vanadium, molybdenum and nickel carbide using liquefied petroleum gas as carbon source. Rev. Fac. Ing. UCV [online]. 2013, vol.28, n.3, pp.109-117. ISSN 0798-4065.
Hydrotreating of distillated fractions is receiving considerable attention since the increasingly stringent environmental regulations on the composition of transportation fuel. Therefore, the research on the development of new catalysts generation, which must be efficient for removing heteroatoms from the hydrocarbon feeds, is growing in importance. In the last years the transition metal carbides have been studied, showing an excellent potential for use in Hydrotreating reactions. Thus, we developed a new synthesis route for metal carbides formation, using an economic carbon source as Liquefied Petroleum Gas with non-conventional precursors. These carbides were formed at temperatures lower than those reported in the literature. Studies by X-ray diffraction allowed following the phase transformations that occurred when performing the synthesis of the different vanadium and molybdenum carbides. The morphology of the solids obtained was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy.
